Published: 7/14/2023

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the role of instrumental and integrative motivation in successful English learning over a three-decade period (1990-2020). The author conducted a literature review using Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to analyze selected articles on the topic. The reviewed studies emphasized the importance of both integrative and instrumental motivation in language learning. Integrative motivation refers to the motivation to integrate into the target culture and community, while instrumental motivation refers to the practical benefits of learning the language. The article highlights the significance of motivational factors in ESL learning and their impact on learners' proficiency and engagement.
