Pengaruh Doomscrolling Dan Harga Diri Terhadap Kecenderungan Perbandingan Sosial Pada Mahasiswa Aktif Pengguna Media Sosial

Abstract

The phenomenon of social media usage triggers excessive content consumption behavior (doomscrolling). Along with fluctuations in self esteem, this condition is suspected to influence individuals to evaluate themselves through social comparison. This study aims to examine the influence of doomscrolling and self esteem on social comparison tendencies among active university students who use social media. This study adopted a quantitative approach involving 161 active students aged 18–25 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via Google Forms using a Likert scale model. The doomscrolling variable was measured using the Social Media Doomscrolling Scale adapted by Rinanda et al. (2025) based on Shabahang et al.’s (2022) theory (12 items, α = 0,898), the Rosenberg Self esteem Scale (9 items, α =0,821), and social comparison with the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) (9 items, α =0,904) Data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression via SPSS 26.0. The F-test results showed that doomscrolling and self esteem simultaneously had a significant effect on social comparison tendencies. Partially (t-test), doomscrolling had no significant effect on social comparison. Conversely, self esteem was proven to have a significant negative effect on social comparison tendencies. The R2 value of 0.256 indicates that the combined contribution of both independent variables is 25.6%, while the remaining 74.4% was explained by other factors. These findings suggest that self-esteem plays a more important role than doomscrolling in reducing social comparison tendencies among university students
